This is really an old song. But what a strong one! Many fans will remember that we used to end concert with this one from 2008 until 2012, with a modified coda that gave us the opportunity to end the gig properly!
““Portrait” was originally recorded for our second demo disc “DSII”. Here you can listen to the first recorded vocals by our singer Enrico, together with backing vocals from the previous singer Matteo. Being a demo recording, the overall sound was really not good, especially for the drums. So I decided to re-record them on the original instrumental takes.” T.M.
This song, along with “Awake” and “The Savior” was originally part of a concept we wanted to develop but that ultimately fall apart when we decided to take a fresh start with “Anywhere But Home”. “Portrait” remains however one of the best memories of our beginnings, as it was extremely fun to play and listen!
lyrics
New colours fade,
the air caresses my skin
I dreamt that day,
the world that I was waiting.
Now it’s living in everywhere…People is free,
there is no poverty.
What can I say?
This is my heaven!
Now I’m living in this new day. They can’t watch me, here.
Even if they look at me, they can’t feel.
Hypnotized tools, they stride…
without aim, without the destination.
What is ‘living’ by this way? There, a painter is drawing a painting of the streets
but everything he tries to portray fades away! The emptiness is expressed,
what he draws is what there is.
Pretending is only a dress
this city wears to hide the mess!
Dull men refuse,
refuse the emotions
you are only slaves, slaves of sorrow!
You, wish to hold your head,
your head in your hands
but can’t say it’s a woe,
I feel this war!

I received this as a surprise present by the band for pre-ordering the upcoming album, so thanks a lot to you, too :-))
As could be expected by Pat Sanders & Co, highly melodic prog that should, for instance, appeal too friends of Fish-era Marillion (although Uncle Fish would never have reached those high notes ;-) ) and some instrumentals (from beautiful miniatures like Bubbles to the more epic Last Supper). Among many other fine things offered here, I especially love Pat's piano playing! Carsten Pieper

To me, "Trip The Life Fantastic" was a must-buy on "Bandcamp Friday" this time. It's one of the few "Drifting Sun" albums not already found in my collection, and an essential one, because it marks the beginning of the prolific collaboration of composer/keyboardist Pat Sanders and lyricist/singer Peter Falconer, which was, in my opinion, the best creative pairing the band ever had.
